Cricket Toss Betting and Session Betting Explained for First-Timers
A coin flip before the first ball and a block of overs in the middle of the match. Here’s how cricket toss betting and session betting work, in plain English.
Before the 2022 Asia Cup final in Dubai, Pakistan’s captain won the toss and chose to field. Sri Lanka batted, made 170 for 6, and went on to win by 23 runs. The side that won the toss lost the match. That small story says a lot about cricket toss betting: the toss decides who gets the first choice, but it doesn’t decide who wins. This guide covers what the toss is and how bets on it work, what “session” means in cricket betting, the markets Arena365 offers, how the odds are priced, and what three real finals show about both.
What the Toss Is and What You Can Bet On
Before a match, the two captains meet at the middle and one of them calls a coin as it spins. Whoever wins the toss chooses whether their team bats or bowls first. That choice matters because pitches change over a match. Some are quicker and truer early on and slower later, and in evening games dew can make the ball wet and hard to grip, which often helps the side batting second.
Cricket toss betting is simply a bet on which team will win the toss. It’s the shortest bet in the sport, settled before a ball is bowled. Arena365 lists a toss market among its cricket markets, usually alongside the other options for the match, so look for it under View All Markets.
One league does it differently. In the BBL, which has 8 teams, the coin was dropped in 2018 and replaced by a bat flip. A bat is flipped in the air and the visiting captain calls it, choosing between the two faces the teams call “hills” and “flats”. It’s a different object but the same idea.
What “Session” Means in Cricket Betting
Session betting can mean two things, depending on who you ask. In a Test match, a day is split into three sessions by the lunch and tea breaks, and fans talk about “winning the session” when one side gets the better of those hours.
In Indian betting circles, a session is something shorter and simpler: the runs scored in a set block of overs, such as the first six. Bettors guess whether a side will score above or below a number in that stretch. On Arena365 the closest fits are the markets on runs in a range of overs, in the next over and in a single chosen over. Each one is a short window of play instead of the whole match.
Cricket Toss Betting and Session Betting Markets on Arena365
Alongside the toss, the markets that work like a session are the range-of-overs totals, the next-over runs market and the single-over totals, where you pick a team’s runs in a given over above or below a line. There are team totals too, and a winner market that counts the Super Over. Not every match offers every market, so check the list on the match page.
A team’s runs in its first six overs depend on the pitch, the bowling attack and how hard the batters hit in the Powerplay.
How the Odds Work
Arena365 shows decimal odds. Multiply your stake by the odds and you get your total return, stake included. A toss is close to a pure 50-50, so the prices sit near even. Say Team A and Team B are both at 1.95. ₹500 on either returns ₹975, a profit of ₹475.
To see what the prices imply, divide 1 by the odds. Each side comes to about 51%, which adds up to roughly 103%. That extra 3% is the bookmaker’s margin, and it’s small because there isn’t much to separate the sides.
A session-style line works the same way with more room to read. Say the first six overs of Team A’s innings carry a line of 48.5 runs, with above at 1.90 and below at 1.90. ₹500 on above returns ₹950, a profit of ₹450, if the side scores 49 or more. Each price is about 53%, which makes roughly 105% together. These numbers are only an illustration.
Three Finals Where the Toss Didn’t Decide the Match
The 2022 Asia Cup final is the opening story: Pakistan won the toss, fielded and lost by 23 runs. Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s 71 not out off 45 balls took Sri Lanka to 170 for 6, and Pakistan finished on 147.
The 2023 Asia Cup final in Colombo went further. Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat, then were bowled out for 50 in 15.2 overs, with Mohammed Siraj taking 6 for 21. India chased it in 6.1 overs without losing a wicket. A toss win can’t protect you from a collapse.
In the 2024 T20 World Cup final in Barbados, India won the toss and batted. They made 176 for 7, South Africa fell 7 runs short, and the toss winner took the trophy. So that’s one in three. Winning the toss helps you choose, but it doesn’t win the match.
Tips for Toss and Session Bets
Treat a toss bet as what it is: close to a coin flip with a small edge to the bookmaker. There’s no form guide to a coin. If you want to bet on it, keep the stake small and don’t try to find a pattern.
For session-style markets there is more to read. Look at the pitch before the match, the weather and who’s opening, since a side with big hitters at the top tends to score faster in the first six. Remember that dew, a shortened game or a collapse can all change the picture quickly.
Whatever you do, set a limit before the match and don’t raise it to win back a loss. Bets can’t be cancelled or edited once Arena365 accepts them.
